In harmony with the existing building scale and site the proposal brings forward a building in three volumes that steps down to meet the newly paved entranceway to the city gardens. The connecting covered structures bind together the existing buildings with the newly added volumes, both physically and organizationally. Both Flustret and the sports hall are intended to function primarily as a fairground and an exercise gym while new programs can be continuously added to complement existing uses. The sports hall has a more spa-oriented focus with its hamam baths and relatively few exercise rooms and lap pools. An encompassing synergy emerges from joining the proposed hotel portions of the new building volumes which contain the more public functions on the ground floor, like the lobby, restaurant, and a child-friendly atmosphere in the style of a Pelle Svanslös house. The new front of Flustret opens more toward the park while an integrated pavilion supports a lovely southside roof terrace above a schweizeri café and a deli.
The Jury statement reads: “A proposal that preserves beauty and harmony, that develops and complements the area with very finely portrayed buildings that consider the historical roots in Art Nouveau of the 1800s with an enriching new architecture. The proposal creates value not only for Uppsala’s inhabitants seeking a peaceful place of contemplation but also for the Akademiska hospital’s patients, visitors, and personnel…”
