A reconstruction of the Andreas Kvarn building in the Jungfrun 3 city block in Norrköping. Erected in 1872 as a grain storage and dryer and defined as a culturally and historically important architectural monument, the building is protected under the Cultural Environment Protection Act.
The east section of the interior is well preserved while the west section has been subjected to extensive demolition during the time the building was used for grain production. New joists and a frame structure had been developed for this section when Marge joined the project. A feasibility study was carried out into the possibility of transforming the structure into a public building, offices and/or housing. The inquiry was conducted in collaboration with the City Architect, the City Antiquarian and the Municipal Building Permit Department, exploring the options in terms of fire, construction and technical installations.
The feasibility study led to a decision that the building should be developed to house flexible workplaces – “coworking” – on the lower two floors while the upper floors should be devoted to more conventional office space for leasing to companies. The exterior alterations include restoration of the brick façade, opening of previously sealed-off doors and windows as well as an extension comprising a lift tower. Based on the original design, new windows and doors have been developed, a comprehensive energy efficiency programme has been devised and the entrance area has been reviewed. The focus of the project has been on the interrelation of the spaces, the building’s vertical communication and how to create a coherent design in which the added and existing elements form a natural whole while avoiding a historicising or contrasting appearance.
The rebuilding is scheduled to commence in autumn 2022.
